The day of the 2nd reading in the House of Commons came and heard nothing so sent another mail… really hoping that she was going to be listening to what her constituents were saying… it read

Good Morning Anne,

Just a quick follow up as I haven’t as yet heard back from you regards my mail in reference the Digital Economy Bill, I hope I included all information as needed.

I know today that this is due to be debated and I very much hope that you push for the bill to have a full and proper debate as my voting stance will certainly be taking this into consideration. For a bill like this to be squeezed in and hidden away behind the general election date announcement is just awful.

Anyway… the 2nd reading came and went as I watched on in disbelief (perhaps I’m a little naive) at the shocking and shambolic way in which our government operates. The bill went to vote but sadly didn’t go the way I was hoping. I then find out that Anne Main wasn’t even at the debate and hence didn’t vote… what is it she’s elected to do again?

So onto the present… I now have received a response from our St Albans MP and it reads as follows. I warn you now do not expect an information overload.

Thank you for your recent correspondence concerning the Digital Economy Bill. I share your concern about this piece of legislation and want to make clear the approach my Party has taken.

Britain has been made to wait too long for legislation updating the regulatory environment for the digital and creative industries. I regret that once the Government got around to considering these issues, it did not allocate the sufficient time in the House of Commons for proper legislative scrutiny. It says a great deal about their support for the creative industries that despite considering many of these issues as far back as 2006 they have only now just brought this piece of legislation forward.

My Party took the decision to seek to remove those clauses of the Digital Economy Bill that we did not support or feel received proper legislative scrutiny, while supporting the Bill as a whole. Rejecting the Bill would have been an unacceptable set-back for the important measures it contains.

Thank you for writing to me and if there is anything further that I can assist you with please do not hesitate to contact me.

"We need you.
